1. What initially inspired you to start fitness training?
As I started to see results, it encouraged me to work harder and harder and then a good friend of mine suggested I compete and I gave it some thought and decided to give it a try.
2. Did it start off as leisure and then become competitive or competitive from the get-go?
Weight training for sure started off as a leisure activity for me and now has become my passion! The more results I achieved in sculpting my figure, the more I wanted to work my butt off and I just kept setting little goals for myself. It never was competitive from the get go...and its more or less a competition with yourself to keep continuing to make yourself happy!
3. Do you do this full-time?
I work as a Registered Nurse in Edmonton. I also run bootcamps 3 x/week(Body Rock Bootcamp) and do Personal one on one training, Nutritional programs, healthy lifestyle coaching as well coaching for ladies that are looking to compete in figure/fitness competitions.
4. Is your family supportive? Do they come out to your competitions?
My family is a HUGE support system to me. They were a little skeptical when I started mostly due to the fact they were not sure what this sport entailed. My dad is my biggest fan....he is so proud and to hear the excitement in his voice when im on stage is priceless!!!
5. There aren't very many South Asian women in Fitness competitions - how does the SA community overall react to your involvement?
I think for the most part with the people I have spoken with they are very excited for me and always ask questions to find out more. I think it is not a very well known sport in our Community, but that is one of the reasons I decided to do this interview. I think it’s important to open the doors for SA women and encourage them to get fit and feel their absolute best!
6. How many shows have you competed in? How many have you won or did well in?
I have competed in 3 shows. I earned my Pro Card in the International Natural Bodybuilding Federation held in Edmonton, Canada for the first time ever (its a bigger federation in the states). I won overall in the Figure category in March 2008. About 6 months later I competed in New York City and placed 2nd and 4th in figure and Ms.Fit Body. And then recently (June'09) I went to Barbados and competed in my first Pro level show and came in 9th.
7. What are your future plans in the fitness world?
I have another upcoming show in June 2010 and will be training for that right away. I plan to continue competing in the fitness industry and hope one day to be on the stage at the Olympia!!!!
