Masala!
Mehndi! Masti! concluded on Sunday after three days of intense
and diverse programming of almost all aspects of South Asian
cultures. The event drew thousands of crowds on all days,
even on Sunday when the Sun played games with us!
According to Harbourfront Centre Saturday was the busiest
day all summer. This was evident from the fact that every
venue was packed to the hilt as were the vendor and food
tents.
Friday night concerts kicked off the festival with a magical
performance by the Toronto Tabla Ensemble. The Ensemble
brought in guest dancer Joanna Das and other performers
from different cultures in a true representation of the
festival's aim at crossing boundaries and creating new sounds.
The audience thrilled at the sounds of ghungroos and taals,
at the picturesque Norigen Stage with the lake and boats
framing the venue.
Later
that evening LAL, performed at another venue to the largest
audience they had ever had. The Brigantine Room was packed
right into the out door tent area, opened up especially
for the concert.
The Community Gallery had works by artists Sejal Purewal,
Allan Woo, and Ruksana Hussain, amongst others.
